Celebrating the Heart and Soul of the Citrus Stampede Rodeo: The People Behind the Scenes
As the 28th Annual Citrus Stampede Rodeo approaches, it’s the perfect time to shine a spotlight on the dedicated individuals and volunteers who bring this beloved event to life.
From the Board of Directors to the countless volunteers, the Citrus Stampede Rodeo is a true testament to community spirit and commitment.
A Dedicated Board of Directors
At the helm of the Citrus Stampede Rodeo is a passionate Board of Directors made up of 12 volunteers from the Citrus County 4-H Association.
“These dedicated individuals work tirelessly throughout the year, with the Chair dedicating 24/7, 365 days a year to ensure the rodeo’s success.”
Other directors typically contribute between 50 to 150 hours or more leading up to the event.
Their responsibilities extend beyond just planning the rodeo; they also support 4-H programs by meeting quarterly to make decisions on scholarship applicants, awards, and new opportunities for local youth.
Long-serving member Marlene Law has been a driving force behind the rodeo for 16 years and has been involved since its inception.
“As the current Chair, Law’s leadership has been pivotal in maintaining the rodeo’s legacy while fostering community engagement.”
Marlene shares, “Interacting with sponsors and picking up new sponsors is my favorite part. Every time the Citrus Stampede Rodeo gets a new sponsor, I know it is someone who wants to support the large 4-H presence in the community.”
Volunteers: The Backbone of the Rodeo
The Citrus Stampede Rodeo thrives on the support of over 60 volunteers, primarily local 4-H and FFA members and their parents.
These volunteers play an essential role, assisting with ticket sales, working the Kiddie Corral, coordinating contestant hospitality, and more. The community’s commitment to returning year after year speaks volumes about the event’s significance in their lives.
“It’s a pillar of 4-H and FFA programs to instill the importance of giving back,' says Law.”
Many former members, including this year’s National Anthem singers, continue to support the rodeo, showcasing the lasting impact these programs have on their lives.
The Importance of Sponsorship
Behind the scenes, about 55-60 sponsors contribute around $32,000 each year to the Citrus Stampede Rodeo.
These funds support vital operations like insurance, merchandise, and stock contractors.
As the rodeo continues to grow, these sponsors also reinvest in Citrus County’s 4-H programs, ensuring that the community benefits from their generosity.
The return rate of sponsors is impressive—80-85% continue their support year after year, recognizing that their contributions are an investment in the youth of Citrus County.
This year marks a special milestone as the rodeo celebrates its first year as a Ford rodeo, adding to its legacy of support.
A Commitment to Charitable Causes
The founding purpose of the Citrus Stampede Rodeo has always been to raise funds for Citrus County 4-H programs.
Since its inception, approximately $500,000 has been invested back into these vital initiatives. Special themed nights, such as Patriotic Night and Pink Night for Breast Cancer Awareness, highlight the rodeo’s commitment to community causes.
“For many involved, the rodeo is deeply personal. Lori McKettrick, one of the founding members, was motivated by her children’s involvement in 4-H.”
Similarly, Marlene Law’s dedication stems from her desire to support the same programs her children participated in, ensuring that future generations have access to the benefits of 4-H.
Marlene expresses, “My goal is to continue to be involved until I reach 30 years of service to the rodeo, as Hal and I originally planned. It’s something I wanted to do with my friend, Hal. We knew how important it is to raise the funds to keep the 4-H operating budget going from year to year.”
Getting Involved
The Citrus County 4-H programs are actively seeking new directors starting this December, inviting anyone interested in making a difference to join their efforts.
As Hal Porter, a founding member and former Chair, once said, “If you can’t sponsor or volunteer for the rodeo, purchase a ticket; that’s giving back to the program!”
This call to action reflects the community's enduring spirit of support and generosity, encouraging everyone to participate in whatever way they can.
As the Citrus Stampede Rodeo draws near, it’s the dedicated individuals and volunteers who truly make this event special.
Their hard work, passion, and commitment to community serve as a reminder of the powerful impact one event can have when it’s driven by people who care.
