Saddle Up for the 28th Annual Citrus Stampede Rodeo: A Celebration of Community and Competition

As the sun sets over Citrus County, anticipation mounts for the 28th Annual Citrus Stampede Rodeo, an event that has blossomed into a cherished tradition for families and rodeo enthusiasts alike.

From its humble beginnings as a bull riding competition to a full-fledged rodeo, this event is a vibrant celebration of community spirit and resilience.

A Legacy of Fun and Fundraising

The Citrus Stampede Rodeo first burst onto the scene in 1995, following a successful bull riding event in 1994 designed to raise funds for Citrus County 4-H programs.

The visionary behind this initiative, a spirited young woman named Lori McKettrick, wanted to create an event that would unite the community—not just through donations but through participation.

“Today, this vision lives on as the rodeo combines thrilling performances with family-friendly activities.”

Held at the Citrus County Fairgrounds since its inception, the rodeo grounds have transformed from a simple grassy area into a vibrant venue equipped with bleachers, a covered arena, and an announcer’s stand—all thanks to the dedicated efforts of local volunteers.

Each year, the rodeo draws between 5,400 and 5,700 fans over the weekend, filling the stands to witness the best contestants from across the Southeast Circuit, which includes Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas.

The Thrill of Competition

This year, the rodeo features a competitive format that includes two main performances plus slack. Contestants compete for top honors in various events, with the highest total score earning the championship title.

With $1,500 in added money for each event—contributed by the rodeo committee—competitors are eager to claim their share of the prize.

Expect to see around 10 contestants per event each night, with slack events showcasing up to 40-50 barrel racers, making this gathering one of the largest pools of contestants in the rodeo's history.

The excitement doesn’t stop at the competition.

Families can enjoy the heart-pounding action while their kids have fun in the Kiddie Corral, featuring face painting, bounce houses, and other engaging activities.

The atmosphere is electric, with everyone coming together to cheer on their favorites and create lasting memories.

Honoring Tradition and Each Other

This year’s rodeo carries special significance as it will honor the memory of Hal Porter, one of the original founding chairs, who passed away in January.

A poignant tribute featuring a riderless horse will take place, with announcer Roger Mooney sharing heartfelt stories of Porter’s lifelong dedication to the rodeo and its impact on local 4-H programs.

The Citrus Stampede Rodeo is not only a celebration of sport but also a platform for community engagement.

It raises vital funds for 4-H programs and scholarships while providing invaluable volunteer opportunities for local youth, instilling the importance of giving back.

This dual purpose strengthens the bonds within the community, making the rodeo a heartfelt affair.

A Unique Experience

What truly sets the Citrus Stampede Rodeo apart is its status as the only rodeo in Citrus County and one of the first PRCA rodeos of the season. As contestants kick off their competitive year here, it serves as a pivotal moment for many who aim to secure their earnings early.

The rodeo has also received accolades, including a WPRA award for most improved ground conditions—an achievement that underscores the commitment to providing a top-notch experience for both contestants and spectators.

“With the stock contractor 5 Star Rodeo from Okeechobee, FL, and announcer Roger Mooney, a 5-time National Finals Rodeo announcer, the quality of the event is guaranteed.”

Adding to the entertainment, the Citrus Stampede Rodeo 4-H Drill Team performs a choreographed horseback routine, captivating the audience.

As the rodeo approaches, the anticipation is palpable. This event is not just about rodeo; it's about community, legacy, and the joy of coming together.

Join us for the 28th Annual Citrus Stampede Rodeo—where every cheer, every ride, and every moment tells a story of heart and heritage.
